Upset week at Wimbledon: Eala shocks Swiatek, Mertens ousts Rybakina

By the Mob Tennis team

Alexandra Eala delivered one of the week's most consequential shocks at 2026 Wimbledon (WTA), beating defending champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets to become the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam in the Open era. The 21-year-old's victory left Swiatek saying the loss is "hard to accept" as she vowed to return to basics. The women's draw continued to fracture when Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, fell to Elise Mertens 7–6 (4), 6–1 in the third round—a stunning result that wide-opens the bottom half. On the men's side, British wildcard Arthur Fery delivered a cathartic five-set comeback over Zizou Bergs, reaching the fourth round for the first time at a Grand Slam despite suffering three nosebleeds during the match. Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 146th in the world, outlasted Matteo Berrettini in a classic five-setter and says he wants to rewrite his Wimbledon story after the emotional victory. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz has become the last American man standing, and a record number of American women remain, including Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula. Off the court, Serena Williams withdrew from doubles due to a right knee injury, ending hopes of a reunion with Venus, though her coaching team indicated more tennis could follow. Wimbledon's second week begins Monday with Sabalenka and Osaka set to meet for the third time in three months in the round of 16.
