Sabalenka's meltdown opens French Open; Cobolli, Kostyuk reach semis

By the Mob Tennis team

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka crashed out of the 2026 French Open (WTA) in shocking fashion, losing 6-3, 5-7, 0-6 to qualifier Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals after suggesting she would prefer to quit tennis. Up a set and two breaks in the second, Sabalenka lost her focus mentally and could not recover, ceding the final set without a game—ending her five-year streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals of every Grand Slam. The collapse leaves the women's draw wide open heading into the semifinals, where Marta Kostyuk becomes the first Ukrainian woman to reach a French Open semifinal. On the men's side, tenth-seeded Flavio Cobolli pulled off a stunning recovery from a set and a break down to defeat No. 4 Félix Auger-Aliassime, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, reaching his first Grand Slam semifinal. Cobolli will face fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi in an all-Italian semifinal, guaranteeing an Italian finalist at Roland Garros. Elsewhere, Matteo Berrettini said he is tired of retiring from matches as yet another injury derailed his hopes of a maiden major title. The women's semifinals will play out against the unavoidable backdrop of Russia-Ukraine tension, with Shnaider—a Russian player—now in contention for the title. The men's and women's finals await this weekend.
