French Open quarterfinals reshape men's draw as upsets pile up

By the Mob Tennis team

The 2026 French Open (ATP) quarterfinals have dismantled the seeded order, eliminating top-10 contenders and clearing a path for unlikely semifinalists. Alexander Zverev dispatched teenage sensation Rafael Jódar 7–6(3), 6–1, 6–3 to advance, equalling Carlos Alcaraz's Grand Slam quarterfinal record in the process. Jakub Mensik rolled past Brazilian prodigy João Fonseca in straight sets to secure a semifinal clash with Zverev, where John McEnroe warned the German that Mensik's emergence represents a genuine threat to his title bid. On the women's side, Mirra Andreeva, 19, dismantled veteran Sorana Cirstea 6–0, 6–3 to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal, while Marta Kostyuk became the first Ukrainian woman to reach the French Open semifinals, dedicating her victory to Ukraine after defeating compatriot Elina Svitolina. The draw has opened dramatically—Jannik Sinner's exit and Novak Djokovic's early departure have created a wide-open tournament. Elsewhere, Kei Nishikori announced his 20-year career will end at the Japan Open later this year, while Serena Williams' return approaches at Queen's. The 2026 French Open (WTA) and ATP semifinals take centre stage Wednesday.
