Zverev wins first Grand Slam, finally breaking through at Roland Garros

By the Mob Tennis team

Alexander Zverev captured his first Grand Slam title on Sunday at the 2026 French Open, defeating Flavio Cobolli 6–1, 4–6, 6–4, 7(7)–6(5), 6–1 in a tense five-set final that ended his long wait for a major trophy. The world No. 3 had reached three previous Grand Slam finals before winning, making the breakthrough especially poignant: four years after exiting the French Open in a wheelchair, he leaves it as Roland Garros champion. Zverev's victory came in one of the most chaotic men's Grand Slam tournaments in recent memory, and he overcame his own nerves in the decider to seal the title. The Italian No. 2 seed showed fight in a gruelling contest, but Zverev's experience and composure proved decisive in the final set. Off court, Zverev mocked former American player Sam Querrey live on air, drawing criticism from fellow ATP players, though his triumph has cemented him as a major force going forward. On the women's side, Mirra Andreeva claimed her first Grand Slam title earlier in the week, and Alexandra Eala won the Birmingham Open for her second WTA singles crown. Serena Williams, 44, plays down any high expectations for her comeback at Queen's, insisting she has "nothing to prove" as she returns to competitive tennis after a four-year hiatus. The tour now turns to the grass season and Wimbledon preparation.
